What if the secret to leadership isn’t about power but empowerment?

The workplace is evolving, and the old, top-down approach to leadership no longer resonates. Instead, a new model of inclusive leadership is taking center stage—one that prioritizes collaboration, emotional intelligence, and adaptability.

“Younger generations, especially Gen Z, expect transparency and purpose-driven work,” says Sabina Saljic, Chief Operating Officer at NYSORA Inc. Leaders today are stepping into roles as mentors and facilitators, empowering their teams to take ownership of their work while navigating uncertainty with trust and authenticity.

Why does this shift matter? Inclusive leadership isn’t just about creating a better work environment—it’s about fostering innovation, building trust, and ensuring long-term success.

This article explores how leaders can adapt to these changing expectations, offering practical strategies like listening, cultivating agility, and embracing purpose. By the end, you’ll be equipped to lead with authenticity, inspire your team, and create a culture that thrives in today’s dynamic world.

the rise of inclusive leadership

“I’ve seen a significant shift toward less hierarchical and more inclusive leadership,” says Sabina. This evolution emphasizes collaboration, emotional intelligence, and empowerment. As Gen Z enters the workforce, it’s clear that the old, authoritative style of leadership no longer resonates. Instead, leaders are now creating environments where teams feel empowered to take initiative, emphasizing collaboration, trust, and shared responsibility over rigid authority.

breaking away from traditional models

“The old hierarchical, top-down model simply doesn’t work anymore,” Sabina states. It can stifle creativity, discourage autonomy, and fail to meet the expectations of modern employees. Leadership today isn’t about control or having the ‘final word’ on decisions. “It’s about guiding your team through uncertainty while supporting them and letting them own their decisions,” she adds.

By doing so, leaders empower their teams to innovate and thrive in an ever-changing environment.

strategies for modern leadership

Sabina highlights two innovative approaches that resonate strongly in today’s business landscape:

1. Leadership by listening “Modern leaders prioritize listening,” Sabina says. “It’s not just about hearing what people say but truly understanding their needs, challenges, and ideas.”

This approach fosters a culture where employees feel valued and empowered, enabling collaboration and creativity.

2. Agile leadership

“Flexibility is no longer optional,” Sabina explains. Agile leadership, which emphasizes adaptability and responsiveness, has become essential in navigating rapid changes. “It’s about creating a framework where teams can innovate and pivot quickly without fear.”

adapting to change

As technology, societal norms, and cultural expectations shift, leaders must adapt continuously. Sabina observes that many leaders now embrace technology and data-driven decision-making, but equally important is their ability to empathize. “Leaders are learning to balance efficiency with humanity,” Sabina shares. “The focus is increasingly on mental health, work-life balance, and creating an environment where people can bring their whole selves to work.”

key qualities for success

When asked what qualities leaders need to cultivate, Sabina emphasizes three: adaptability, emotional intelligence, and purpose. “Adaptability helps leaders navigate the unpredictable,” she explains. “Emotional intelligence ensures they can connect with their teams, especially in turbulent times. And a strong sense of purpose inspires not just the team but also the leaders themselves.”

an example of redefining leadership

Patagonia stands out as an organization redefining leadership, according to Sabina. “They’re a fantastic example of what purpose-driven leadership looks like,” she says. “Their focus on sustainability, social responsibility, and their employees are inspiring. They’ve shown that aligning business goals with societal impact is not only possible but highly effective.”

fostering a culture of innovation

Organizations play a crucial role in nurturing innovative leadership. “It starts with creating an environment where failure is part of the learning process,” Sabina says. “People need to feel safe to experiment and share ideas without judgment.” Leaders also have to lead by example. “Show vulnerability,” she advises. “It’s okay to admit you don’t have all the answers. What matters is being open and willing to try new things.”

overcoming resistance to change

Change is hard, especially for leaders accustomed to traditional methods. “The biggest challenge is fear,” Sabina observes. “Fear of losing control, fear of failing, and fear of the unknown.”

The solution?

Patience and self-awareness. “Leaders need to practice self-reflection and give themselves time to adjust,” she says. “Mentorship, peer support, and continuous learning can make this process much easier.”

looking ahead: the future of leadership

Sabina envisions a future where leadership is more value-driven than ever.

“Successful leaders a decade from now will be emotionally intelligent, agile, and deeply committed to their purpose,” she predicts. Diversity and inclusivity will be non-negotiable, and leaders will be expected to champion social and environmental causes. “Leadership will be less about competition and more about collaboration,” she adds.

“Those who can empower their teams and foster trust will be the ones who thrive.”

a message to emerging leaders

Sabina’s advice for aspiring leaders is simple yet powerful: “Lead with authenticity, and don’t be afraid to challenge the norms. Build a team that values collaboration, diversity, and innovation. And remember, leadership is about service, not authority. Trust your instincts, listen to your team, and stay true to your values. That’s how you’ll make your mark.”
